A rhyme in which a stressed syllable is followed by an unstressed syllable, as in “war is” and “bar is”.

Revise: The Man He KilledIn the final stanza, “war is” (line 17) rhymes with “bar is” (line 19). These are feminine rhymes: the stressed “war” and “bar” are followed by the unstressed “is”. Their jaunty, almost comic sound places war alongside an ordinary drinking place.

In the sestet, “bare”, “everywhere” and “air” alternate with the feminine rhymes “insphere thee”, “hear thee” and “near thee”. These latter rhymes extend from the stressed syllable into the unstressed “thee”: they are not simply repetitions of the octave’s “thee” rhyme. Each D line closes on “thee”, repeatedly bringing the verse back to the beloved.
