Didactic text

Published in 1843, the novella is a didactic text: its entertaining ghost story also teaches a moral lesson. Dickens makes that lesson convincing through contrasts between characters, frightening consequences and the reversal of Scrooge's behaviour. Readers witness not just what he learns, but what changes when he acts on it.
