Chastity

In the patriarchal culture of Shakespeare’s time, a daughter’s chastity was closely associated with family honour and legitimate inheritance. Miranda’s marriage to the heir of Naples also connects two ruling families. Prospero’s warning is therefore both protective and politically significant.

The metaphor reduces her to an object whose value can be judged and rejected, reflecting a society in which a woman's chastity affected her family's reputation and her suitability for marriage. However, the audience knows that Hero is innocent, so the dramatic irony makes Claudio's confident judgement appear dangerously unreliable. By turning an expected wedding into an accusation, Shakespeare shows how protecting male honour can endanger the woman whom marriage should unite with her husband.

After discovering the truth, Othello addresses Desdemona in Act 5 Scene 2: 'Cold, cold, my girl! / Even like thy chastity.' The repetition confronts the physical reality of death. 'Chastity' now recognises the innocence he denied, but that recognition arrives too late to save her.
