Binary opposition

Stanzas two and three set up binary oppositions: ‘A man buried in Pakistan’ against ‘A woman buried in New York City’, then ‘When we sleep they wake’, on ‘Opposite sides of the world’. The parallel lines hold man and woman, Pakistan and New York City, sleeping and waking apart. Stanza four resolves them: ‘The planet opens a tunnel / Where they meet’.
