Abolitionist

A poet, novelist and abolitionist lecturer, she campaigned against slavery and racial discrimination and for women’s rights. She later helped found the National Association of Colored Women. The American Civil War of 1861–65 and the continuing struggle for equal rights after it give weight to her vision: ending a war did not automatically end oppression.
