A word or phrase that helps the audience follow the direction of an argument, such as ‘However’ or ‘The next step’.

Revise: Writing the text for a speechSignposts show where the argument is going. ‘The next step is to make it practical’ moves from possibilities to participation. ‘Of course’ can introduce a concern; ‘So’ can signal the conclusion.
Paper 1
A phrase or sentence that guides an audience through the development of ideas, for example 'But how would this work?'
Use signposts that listeners can follow, but avoid starting every paragraph with the same connective.

Transitions can sound natural aloud: 'So what am I proposing?', 'But listening together is only the beginning' and 'I know what some of you are thinking'. These signposts help listeners understand why the speech is moving to its next point.

Revise: Writing a speech or talkSignposts make that movement audible. ‘First, consider what we throw away’ announces a priority; ‘Next, think about the journeys we make’ moves listeners to a connected concern. These phrases do more than number points: they make the direction of the talk easy to follow.
