Revise: Writing a reviewA review combines information with judgement. Readers need to know what you are reviewing, what it is like and whether it is worth their time, money or attention. A review of a film might explain that its central mystery is gripping but its ending feels rushed.

A review evaluates something: it tells readers what it is like, judges how successful it is and explains whether it deserves their attention. You might review a book, film or television programme, or use the same approach to evaluate an event, place or activity. The question determines your subject and audience.

It gives readers enough understanding of a book, film, game or other subject to follow your opinions, then explains whether it deserves their attention. A verdict such as ‘excellent’ is only a starting point: the reader needs to know what makes it excellent and whether those qualities would appeal to them.
