A headteacher can change school arrangements; a newspaper editor can draw public attention to an issue; a well-known person might be able to support a campaign.

A successful formal letter does more than express an opinion. It makes clear why you are writing, develops your views and helps a particular reader understand what response you want. A council might need practical proposals; a headteacher might need reasons to reconsider a decision; a newspaper editor might need a clear argument that would interest the newspaper’s readers.
