The assessment objective rewarding effective, imaginative communication suited to the task, purpose and audience, together with coherent organisation.

AO5 contributes 24 marks for content and organisation. It rewards what you communicate, how well your language suits the task and reader, and how effectively you shape and connect your ideas. AO6 contributes 16 marks for technical accuracy: spelling, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary and sentence forms used for clarity and effect.

Choose one option and keep its exact focus visible in your plan. From June 2026, writing that does not directly address the task is capped at 12/24 for AO5.

AO5: communication and organisation — 24 marks. This rewards how clearly, effectively and imaginatively you communicate, and how well you organise the narrative. The examiner considers the development of plot and characters, the suitability of the voice and style, and whether the writing holds the reader’s interest.
