Paper 1
The ability of a material to resist deformation, such as bending, when a force is applied.
Revise: Composite materialsThe fibres provide reinforcement, improving strength and stiffness. Strength is the ability to withstand forces without failing; stiffness is resistance to deformation, such as bending. The resin forms the matrix: it surrounds the fibres, holds them together and gives the finished component its shape.
- Revise: Papers and boards
Resistance to bending; a stiff sheet retains its shape more readily than a flexible sheet.
