A surface treatment using heat and oil, such as linseed oil, to blacken steel and produce a matt, textured finish. The oil also provides a barrier against oxygen and water, helping to prevent rusting.

Revise: Surface Treatments and FinishesOil finishing uses heat and oil to darken the surface of steel. First clean the steel to remove dust, grease and unwanted oil. Then heat it and apply a suitable finishing oil, such as linseed oil, using the workshop’s approved method.
Do not treat chemical black-oxide finishing as interchangeable with oil finishing black steel.
