A plastic particle smaller than 5 mm, which may be manufactured at that size or formed when a larger plastic item breaks into fragments.
Revise: Ecological Footprint of PolymersConventional plastic debris can persist in the marine environment and fragment into microplastics, particles smaller than 5 mm. Breaking into smaller pieces is not the same as fully biodegrading: the plastic remains in the environment. Preventing litter and managing waste properly therefore matter as well as choosing a disposal route.
