Definition

A method of reducing file size without losing information, allowing the exact original data to be recovered.

Both lossy and lossless compression can save storage space and reduce the amount of data sent across a network. The important difference is what happens to the original information: is some of it discarded, or is all of it preserved in a more compact representation?
