Revise: Tests for GasesA splint is a thin wooden stick. A burning splint has a flame; a glowing splint has a hot, glowing tip but no flame. This difference matters because hydrogen and oxygen require different tests.

For hydrogen, hold a burning splint at the mouth of the test tube. For oxygen, insert a glowing splint into the tube.
Keep the splints distinct: hydrogen uses a burning splint at the mouth of the tube; oxygen uses a glowing splint inside it.

A splint is a thin strip of wood. Light one, then blow out the flame so that the tip is still glowing. Lower this glowing splint through the open mouth of a test tube of the gas, so that its glowing tip is inside.
