Limewater

The test uses limewater, an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide. Here, aqueous means dissolved in water. Before the test, the limewater is clear; the important observation is whether it becomes cloudy when it contacts the gas.

Test the gas by bubbling it through limewater, which is a solution of calcium hydroxide. Carbon dioxide turns the initially clear limewater milky or cloudy white.
