A charged group of atoms that acts as a single ion, such as nitrate, , or sulfate, .
Specification 5.4.2.2 · Paper 3
Specification Ionic bonding · Paper 3, Paper 4
A group of two or more atoms with an overall electrical charge, treated as one unit when balancing an ionic formula.
Revise: Ionic bondingSome ions are groups of atoms carrying one overall charge. These are polyatomic ions, such as hydroxide, nitrate, carbonate and sulfate. Keep each group’s internal formula unchanged when balancing charges.
Use brackets when more than one polyatomic ion is needed: magnesium nitrate is Mg(NO₃)₂, not MgNO₃₂.
Use brackets when more than one polyatomic ion is needed. In Ca(OH)₂, the subscript 2 applies to the whole OH group.
