Revise: Ionic bondingA dot and cross diagram lets you track the electrons from different atoms. Use crosses for the metal atom’s outer electrons and dots for the non-metal atom’s outer electrons.
A representation of outer-shell electrons that uses dots and crosses to distinguish electrons supplied by different atoms.
In an ionic dot and cross diagram, show each final ion in square brackets with its charge outside. Dots and crosses distinguish where the electrons came from; they are not different types of electron.
In a dot-and-cross diagram, include the unshared outer-shell electrons as well as the shared pairs.
