A value below which a stated percentage of a reference population falls. For example, the 25th percentile for mass is the mass below which approximately 25% of the comparison group falls.

Revise: Growth, Differentiation and Percentile ChartsA percentile line shows a position within the comparison group. A child on the 25th percentile for mass is heavier than approximately 25% and lighter than approximately 75% of children of the same age in that group. The 50th percentile is the median: approximately half the group has a lower mass and half has a higher mass.
The 25th percentile does not mean that a child has 25% of the average mass. It compares the child with others of the same age.
Assess growth using measurements over time. A single high or low percentile does not, by itself, show a health problem.
