Inverse proportion

Definition

A relationship in which increasing one quantity decreases the other by the same factor, so their product stays constant.

This relationship is called inverse proportion. Doubling the frequency halves the wavelength; halving the frequency doubles the wavelength. It is not simply that one quantity increases while the other decreases: they change by reciprocal factors.
