Revise: Genetic EngineeringHerbicide-resistant crops survive a particular weedkiller. Farmers can spray that herbicide to kill weeds while leaving the crop unaffected. Removing weeds reduces competition with the crop for light, water and mineral ions.

Keep insect resistance and herbicide resistance separate. Insect resistance can reduce insecticide spraying; herbicide resistance allows weeds to be sprayed without damaging the crop.
Distinguish insecticides, which kill insects, from herbicides, which kill unwanted plants. Herbicide tolerance does not mean a crop kills weeds itself.
