Revise: Carbon Footprint ReductionCarbon capture and storage collects carbon dioxide from power generation or industrial processes and stores it deep underground, for example in suitable porous rocks previously containing oil or gas. Its purpose is to stop that carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere. The need for capture equipment and storage arrangements means that investment is a significant limitation.

Carbon capture and storage can prevent some carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere by capturing it and storing it underground. Its potential benefit depends on how widely it can be used. It is expensive, and uncertainty about long-term storage creates a risk: if stored carbon dioxide escapes, the intended benefit is reduced.
