What a writer seeks to achieve through a text, such as entertaining, persuading, criticising or presenting a particular image of themselves.
Distinguish form, genre and purpose: how a text is organised, the literary category it belongs to, and what it seeks to achieve.
Support a claim about purpose with a particular detail and explain its effect. Naming humour or criticism alone is not enough.
A text may have several purposes: entertaining readers and encouraging moral reflection can work together.
