Revise: Spartan Battle Tactics and EquipmentA phalanx was a close formation with soldiers standing side by side in several ranks. The shield protected its bearer and also helped cover the man to his left. Each soldier consequently depended partly on the shield of the man to his right to protect his own exposed right side.
