Revise: RomeAn owner might grant it, or allow a worker to accumulate a peculium that could help purchase freedom. A peculium was money or assets the slave managed with permission, not securely independent property: the owner retained ultimate control. Freedom was a possibility, not a guarantee, and its prospect could encourage obedience.
- Revise: Slaves and freedmen
Money, property or other assets an owner allowed an enslaved person to manage. It legally belonged to the owner but could sometimes be used to purchase freedom.
