Paper 2
Money or property accompanying a bride into marriage. In Athens, arrangements included a pledge concerning its return if the marriage ended.
Revise: GreeceA dowry was an important part of the arrangement; marriage without one was exceptional. The husband pledged to return it if the marriage was dissolved or his wife died, where there was no heir. This shows that marriage involved financial obligations as well as expectations about family and children.
- Revise: Rome
Money or property provided in connection with a marriage to help support the married household.
