Revise: The Political and Social Impact of the Athenian MilitaryThe Long Walls connected Athens to Piraeus, allowing food to arrive by sea even when an enemy army invaded Attica. Farmers and movable property could be brought inside the fortifications instead of Athens having to risk a pitched battle. This offered security, but also meant abandoning normal life in the countryside and depending on continued control of sea routes.
