Paper 5
Revise: The Political and Social Impact of the Athenian MilitaryThe relationship between democracy and military power worked in both directions. Democratic organisation helped Athens mobilise its citizens; military activity then became increasingly important to democratic public life. Neither development should be treated as the sole cause of the other.
Do not claim that the navy created Athenian democracy: democratic reforms began before the major fleet expansion of 483/2 BC.
Distinguish democracy within Athens from Athenian control over its allies: greater participation for Athenian citizens did not mean freedom for subject states.
