Revise: The Youth Justice SystemThe police and local Youth Offending Team work together on out-of-court responses. These can include a youth caution, rather than a court prosecution, where the relevant conditions are met. A caution is not a sentence handed down by a youth court.

Do not confuse local Youth Offending Teams, which work directly with children, with the Youth Justice Board, which oversees the system.

Where appropriate, the police and youth offending team can work together on an out-of-court disposal, such as a caution, or arrange diversion into suitable support. Diversion means responding outside formal court proceedings where this is appropriate.
