Its six original members—France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg—sought closer economic cooperation. They developed a customs union, removing customs duties between members and applying common tariffs to goods from outside.

After that period ended, the UK was outside the EU single market and customs union. The Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), agreed in December 2020, became a major basis for the new relationship.
