Revise: UK Relations with EuropeThe Council of Europe is a separate organisation, with 46 member states. Its central role is protecting human rights, rather than running a single market or negotiating EU trade policy. The UK was a founding member and helped create the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
Do not confuse the Council of Europe with the Council of the European Union: the latter is an EU institution.
Brexit ended UK membership of the EU, not membership of the Council of Europe or participation in the European Convention on Human Rights.
