Specification 1.41 · Paper 1, Paper 2
A representation that shows or suggests height, width and depth.
Specification C2.2g, CM2.3i · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
Revise: Model LimitationsEven a three-dimensional representation remains a model. It may not be to scale, particles can obscure those behind them, and a drawing can show only one viewpoint. Giant structures must be represented by a limited section rather than in full.
A representation that shows or models length, width and depth, allowing the spatial arrangement of atoms to be examined.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
A representation that shows the spatial arrangement of atoms in three dimensions.
Revise: Limitations of molecular modelsA three-dimensional representation communicates spatial shape more effectively. Yet gaining this clearer picture of shape may mean losing detail about electrons and how bonds form. A 3D model viewed on a flat page can introduce another limitation because perspective may obscure atoms or bonds; rotating a physical or digital model can reveal information that one fixed view cannot.
