A route with high atom economy tends to use raw materials more efficiently, but sustainability requires a wider judgement. Consider whether the raw materials are renewable, whether other uses compete for them, how much energy the route needs, and the nature and quantity of its waste and by-products. A by-product that another process can use is different from one that needs disposal.
