Specification 4.5.1.1 · Paper 1, Paper 2
The area or materials around the reacting substances to which energy can be transferred or from which energy can be taken.
Revise: Exothermic and Endothermic ProcessesEnergy can move between the reacting substances and their surroundings: for example, the liquid around them, the container or your hand. If energy is transferred from a reaction to its surroundings, the products have less energy than the reactants by the amount transferred. If energy is taken in, the products have more energy than the reactants.
- Revise: Chemical Energetics and Kinetics
Everything outside the reaction system that can exchange energy with it.
