Revise: Paper ChromatographyThe paper contains the stationary phase, which stays in place. Each substance spends some time moving with the solvent and some time held by the stationary phase. A substance carried more readily by the solvent moves further in a given time; one held more strongly by the stationary phase moves less far.

State that the solvent is the mobile phase and that the paper contains the stationary phase; avoid calling the paper itself the stationary phase.
Explain separation by comparing both phases: a component that is more strongly attracted to the stationary phase moves more slowly, while one that is more soluble in or attracted to the mobile phase moves faster.
A substance remaining on the baseline does not necessarily mean chromatography has failed; it may be insoluble in the mobile phase or strongly attracted to the stationary phase.
