Locating agent

Some separated substances are colourless, so their positions must be revealed using a locating agent.

After the chromatogram has dried, use a suitable locating agent to make those spots visible. The revealed pattern can then be used to judge whether the sample contains one component or several. The appropriate method therefore depends on the sample: choose a suitable solvent, and include a locating agent when the spots would otherwise be invisible.
