The weighted mean mass of the atoms of an element compared with one-twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
Revise: Atomic Mass Ordering and IsotopesIn 1869, the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev arranged the known elements into a periodic table. He thought that he had placed them in order of increasing relative atomic mass. He also compared the chemical properties of the elements and their compounds, placing elements with similar properties in the same groups.
- Revise: Relative Formula Mass and Percentage by Mass
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element relative to one-twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom; it takes account of the relative abundances of the element’s isotopes.
