An alcohol in which the carbon attached to the –OH group is bonded to no more than one other carbon atom. It can be oxidised to a carboxylic acid.

Revise: Predicting Organic ReactionsWhen acidified and heated with a primary alcohol, it can change the end group from –CH₂OH to –COOH, forming a carboxylic acid.
Keep the carbon chain when oxidising a primary alcohol: the carbon bearing –CH₂OH becomes the carbon of –COOH.
