A positively charged particle formed when an atom loses one or more electrons.
Revise: Bonding in metalsImagine the positive ions packed in a regular arrangement, with delocalised electrons occupying the spaces around them. The ions and electrons have opposite charges, so they attract one another. This electrostatic attraction is metallic bonding.
An atom or group of atoms with a positive charge because it has lost one or more electrons.
In a structure diagram, label the closely packed positive ions and the electrons that can move throughout the metal.
When explaining reactivity, state that metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions; do not say that they gain electrons.
