Specification 4.1.1.4 · Paper 1
Revise: Subatomic ParticlesIt is therefore neutral.
Specification 1.4, 1.10, 3.2 · Paper 1, Paper 2
Having no overall electrical charge because the positive and negative charges balance.
Revise: Protons and ElectronsAn atom is electrically neutral: its net charge is zero. For this to happen, its total positive charge must exactly balance its total negative charge. It therefore contains the same number of protons as electrons.
Having no overall electrical charge because the total positive and negative charges balance.
Describes a solution with a pH of exactly 7, so it is neither acidic nor alkaline.
Specification C3.3h · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
Neither acidic nor alkaline; a neutral aqueous solution has a pH of 7.
Revise: pH ScalePure water is neutral and has a pH of 7. Everyday water samples may contain dissolved substances, however, so tap or river water can be slightly acidic or slightly alkaline.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
Neither acidic nor alkaline; a neutral aqueous solution has a pH of 7.
Revise: pH scaleThe closest colour gives an approximate pH. That value allows the solution to be classified as acidic, neutral or alkaline and compared with other solutions.
When explaining why an atom is neutral, state that it has equal numbers of protons and electrons and that their equal, opposite charges cancel. Do not refer to equal numbers of protons and neutrons.
If a particle has unequal numbers of protons and electrons, describe it as an ion rather than a neutral atom.
For a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons. Do not subtract the atomic number from the mass number to find electrons.
