Specification C3.3h · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
Having a pH below 7.
Revise: pH ScaleThe pH of an aqueous solution is a number that measures its relative acidity or alkalinity. It lets us classify and compare solutions using the same scale: instead of merely saying that two solutions are acidic, their pH values show which is more acidic.
Classify a solution by comparing its pH with 7: below 7 is acidic, exactly 7 is neutral and above 7 is alkaline.
Do not write that pH 7 is acidic or alkaline; it is the single neutral value.
When comparing solutions on the same side of 7, the lower pH is more acidic and the higher pH is more alkaline.
