Specification 4.1.2.5 · Paper 1
A compound containing hydroxide ions, ; soluble Group 1 hydroxides produce alkaline solutions.
Specification 3.11, 6.3 · Paper 1, Paper 2
A compound containing a metal ion and hydroxide ions, OH⁻.
Revise: Reactions of AcidsMetal hydroxides are also bases.
A compound formed here when a Group 1 metal reacts with water; its solution is alkaline.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
In the reaction with water, include both products: the metal hydroxide and hydrogen. The resulting solution is alkaline.
Do not describe an acid–metal reaction as neutralisation. Metal oxides and metal hydroxides act as bases, forming salt and water only; a metal carbonate also produces carbon dioxide, so it does not fit this course’s definition of a base.
Name both products: hydrogen gas and the metal hydroxide. The bubbles alone do not identify the gas.
