Specification 4.4.2.4 · Paper 1
A solution containing hydroxide ions, ; it has a pH above 7.
Do not use alkali and alkaline interchangeably: an alkali is a soluble base, while an alkaline solution is the solution it forms in water.
Do not write that Group 1 metals simply “dissolve” in water. They react, producing hydrogen and an alkaline solution of the metal hydroxide.
When comparing two acidic solutions, the one with the lower pH is more acidic. When comparing two alkaline solutions, the one with the higher pH is more alkaline.

Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
Revise: Group 1 propertiesGroup 1 is the first vertical column of the Periodic Table. Its elements are metals and are often called the alkali metals because their reactions with water form alkaline solutions. Lithium, sodium and potassium are the Group 1 metals most often compared at GCSE.
A solution with a pH above 7 and a relatively low concentration of hydrogen ions.
