Specification C3.1h · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
The mass of a sample, represented by and commonly measured in grams in mole calculations.
Revise: Mass and Moles RelationshipA balance measures mass, usually in grams. Chemists also use amount of substance, measured in moles. These are not the same quantity: a mole counts a fixed number of specified particles, whereas mass measures how heavy the sample is.
When comparing masses, state whether the reaction took place in an open or closed system and identify any gas entering or leaving.
Calculate mass change as final mass minus initial mass. A negative value means the measured mass decreased; a positive value means it increased.
Do not claim that matter has been destroyed when mass decreases in an open flask: a gaseous product may have escaped into the surroundings.
