Magnification

Scale diagrams can communicate relative size, but only if they have a scale bar, magnification or numerical labels. Pictures of atoms in textbooks are not life-sized, and particle diagrams usually enlarge particles enormously so that their arrangement can be seen. The drawn circles also do not show sharp outer surfaces: atomic “diameter” is a useful approximate measurement.
