Specification C2.3b · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
A formula that represents every member of a homologous series using a variable such as .
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
A formula that describes the composition shared by members of a homologous series, using n for a variable number of carbon atoms.
Do not say that members have the same molecular formula. They have the same general formula, but their molecular formulae differ.
When identifying a homologous series from formulae, compare consecutive members: they should differ by as well as following the same general formula.
