A column that improves the separation of liquids by allowing repeated evaporation and condensation.
For fractional distillation, explain what the fractionating column does rather than saying only that the liquids have different boiling points.

Fractional distillation adds a fractionating column between the heated flask and the condenser. Vapour rises through the column, cooling and condensing repeatedly. The higher-boiling liquid is more likely to condense and run back into the flask, while vapour richer in the lower-boiling liquid reaches the condenser.
