Revise: Concentration of EthanolVapour that condenses in the column can run down and evaporate again. This repeated condensation and evaporation makes the vapour reaching the top richer in the lower-boiling ethanol. It passes into a condenser, where it cools and becomes liquid, then runs into a receiving vessel.

The vapour passes into a condenser, where cooling turns it back into liquid. Collect this liquid, the distillate, in a separate vessel. A thermometer near the outlet helps monitor the vapour temperature.

Revise: Separation processesThe water vapour travels into a condenser, where cold water flowing around the inner tube removes heat. The vapour condenses and is collected as liquid water in another vessel. The solution left in the flask becomes more concentrated as water is removed.
