Specification 4.2.2.1 · Paper 1
Revise: States of MatterBoiling is the change from liquid to gas throughout the liquid; the reverse process is condensing. Both take place at the boiling point.
Specification C1.1a, C2.3e · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
The change from the gas state to the liquid state when energy is transferred from a substance.
Revise: Features of the Particle ModelMelting and freezing are reverse processes, as are boiling and condensing.
A change of state from a gas to a liquid.
Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 2 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher), Paper 4 (Higher)
A change from gas to liquid in which energy is transferred from the substance to the surroundings.
Revise: Energy transfers and changes of stateMelting and boiling therefore require energy transfer to a substance, whereas freezing and condensing involve energy transfer from it. These changes are reversible physical changes.
Use the direction of energy transfer: energy is transferred to the substance during melting and boiling, and from the substance during freezing and condensing.
Use precise directions for state changes: solid → liquid is melting; liquid → gas is boiling; gas → liquid is condensing; liquid → solid is freezing.
Do not say that heating through a change of state creates a new substance; melting, boiling, freezing and condensing are physical changes.
