Definition

The difference between two values, commonly written using the Greek letter delta, $\Delta$ .

A shallow slope has a smaller gradient and represents a slower change. On a product-formed graph, a horizontal section has zero gradient: no more product is being formed, so the rate is zero.

A downward slope gives a negative gradient. If the question asks for the speed at which a reactant is being used up, report the positive magnitude unless a signed rate of change is requested.
