The extraction of a metal from its compound by heating it with carbon or using a carbon-derived reducing agent such as carbon monoxide.

Revise: Extraction Methods and ReactivityDetailed knowledge of the blast furnace is not required here; the important connection is that iron lies below carbon, so carbon reduction is possible.
Do not claim that every extraction method is cheap. Carbon reduction is generally cheaper than electrolysis, but it still needs fuel and high-temperature equipment.
